A draft bill for the establishment of a Malaysian Transportation Safety Board (MTSB) is expected to the tabled in Parliament next year, transport minister Anthony Loke said, reported The Star.
The transport ministry is in the final stages of completing a memorandum on the establishment of the transportation safety board, and this would be presented to the Cabinet before the end of the year, the transport minister informed the Dewan Rakyat.
“Once we receive approval in principle, the Attorney General’s Chambers can proceed with drafting the Bill. We hope to bring it back to Parliament for tabling next year,” Loke said.
The transport minister’s statement was in response to Setiu member of parliament Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir, who asked about key obstacles which have delayed the establishment of the MTSB which was first proposed more than a decade ago.
The Malaysian government has yet to finalise the MTSB model, but it would be benchmarked against international agencies, said the transport minister.
“Of course, we will take into account best practices used by such agencies. The task force set up for this purpose will also operate independently in conducting investigations and making recommendations. Once the report is completed, it will not be altered and will be released publicly,” he said.
In August this year, the transport ministry was reported to be considering a proposal for the establishment of the MTSB that will be tasked with investigating road accidents in the country.
