Gov’t green-lights the development of a single e-MSP app, looking to integrate all EV chargers in Malaysia

Too many players and the need for multiple apps is something that will be familiar to EV users utilising public charging networks, but the government is looking to address this issue by unifying the process to make the infrastructure more accessible, integrating everything through a single service platform.

Prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the move was green-lighted during the national energy council (MTN) meeting Number 2 of 2025, which focused on topics under the natural gas (NGR) roadmap. “The meeting also approved the development of an e-mobility service platform (e-MSP) to integrate the operations of electric vehicle charging stations across the country,” he said in a Facebook post.

While no other details were revealed, the plan sounds very much like the one indicated back in March this year by PLANMalaysia, the town and country planning department under the purview of the ministry of housing and local government (KPKT).

The department had then said it was in the process of developing an app to integrate various charge point operators (CPOs) into a single platform, essentially making it easier for EV users to facilitate their public charging needs. It added then that it was in discussions with other entities such as the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corp (MGTC) and Malaysia Digital Department.

A unified platform would simplify the EV charging experience by providing access to all charging stations in the country, accessed through a single app. Presently, there are a host of CPOs, each with their own apps that enable users to find charging stations, check real-time availability, make reservations and pay for charging sessions.

While some of these apps integrate charging stations of other CPOs via roaming, not every player is doing so, leading to the usual host of apps on a mobile device should there be a need to access charging points beying a user’s preferred platform, especially when travelling beyond the usual daily routes.

The department had said it was aware of the challenges in attempting unification, with integrating the workings of various CPOs a major one. “A single app may involve integrating various app interfaces, ensuring that they can communicate seamlessly and that users can access all charging stations regardless of the network,” it had said.

Another hurdle would be to ensure real-time, and accurate data ,on the availability of charging bays for users. “Any discrepancy in data can frustrate users and undermine trust in the system. As such, the ability to integrate real-time data feeds from each provider and ensure information is updated accurately is essential,” it said, adding that it hoped that these challenges could be tackled concisely to create a single platform that would satisfy all needs.

How all this will be accomplished by getting everyone on the same page – and when it will come about – remains to be seen, but at least the first steps to address the fragmentation are being taken with the go-ahead for the development towards an integrated e-MSP.
