Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz revealed plans to expand the G-Class line-up to include a cabriolet version. Fast forward to December, the company has announced it is now running prototypes of the drop-top model on the road for testing purposes.
The first round of testing is currently ongoing in Austria, with camouflaged units of the G-Class Cabriolet being driven on the road to provide valuable data to engineers. Moving forward, the model will be subjected to demanding winter testing in Sweden as the company looks to make sure that even without a fixed roof, the G-Class is still capable when the going gets tough.
The accompanying photos of the prototypes reveal a vehicle that is unmistakably a G-Class with a boxy shape. The convertible soft top looks to slide back from just above the dashboard and looks different from the full Landaulet setup seen on Maybach G650.
Like the latter, the new G-Class Cabriolet’s bodywork is cut off behind the rear seats, and the soft top sees a small rear window as well as a repositioning of the third brake light to the spare tyre carrier. Also like the Landaulet, Mercedes-Benz says the upcoming G-Class Cabriolet will be a special edition model, indicating it will be offered in limited numbers.
